![]() It should influence your choice of what to use (maybe more if there are repeated incidents) but much more important is the consideration of what would happen if/when a security incident occurs. Security incidents can happen to anyone, anywhere. I’d also recommend a look at one of our other blog posts that specifically goes over a scenario in which 1Password is hacked. We don’t store or know either of those things, so we can’t use or leak them ourselves. Secret Keys are not guessable, and given that each one is both strong and unique, especially in combination with your password, only someone with both of those secrets will be able to view your data. Your Secret Key contributes to the encryption of your 1Password data and ensures that, even if that encrypted data is somehow exposed, it would be impossible for an attacker to simply guess at your password to decrypt it. ![]() 1Password is made unique by way of the secondary encryption secret that’s automatically generated client-side for every owner of a 1Password account upon signing up. As our Principal Security Architect has said, we don’t plan on being breached, but we must plan for being breached. Neither I nor anyone else at 1Password would make the claim that it’s an exception to that rule. It should first be said that nothing is unhackable.
